Who is Chuck?

Chuck is just a regular guy. "But sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place". Chuck's ride began in quiet midcentury Kansas, zig zagged through Alabama, Ohio, Iowa, a degree in psychology, mall toy store manager, door-to-door snack salesman, and road auditor where he spent his nights in motels teaching himself to paint. He took the leap in his 40's, deciding to "Chuck it" – and went full time artist, renting a teeny tiny studio in City Market, Savannah, GA. It was the early days for art in Savannah, with a growing presence of the Savannah College of Art and Design, and a rising reputation internationally as an art destination. It was still the Deep South, and his huge luminescent nudes scandalized the City Fathers. No coastal watercolors for Chuck; he has been been committed to bringing real art to his beautiful adopted home town. ("Am I wrong? Am I wrong?") Now awarded and beloved by locals and collectors all over the world--to whom he personally delivers when offered dinner--he is in his 17th year at City Market. Widely read and huge music and jazz buff, he has taught himself piano and can be heard most nights at the gallery regaling his admirers with music requests and literary puns. Equally if not huger movie buff, Chuck has extensively painted his take on iconic movie moments, recently his favorite, "The Big Lebowski". When cornered for his artist's statement, he insists, "You know, a lotta ins, a lotta outs, a lotta what-have-yous". Or he might want you to know that his grandfather was a cowboy. But he'd probably be just as happy talking bikes. "At least it's an ethos."
